Sanxiantai Arch Bridge 三仙台跨海步橋

You already know this bridge with its eight arches, even if you have never been there before. The 1987 structure is a frequent subject of tourist materials about Taiwan and it's quite nice to see it in person. It is located near Taitung County near the village of Chenggong. A visit to the bridge and then especially a walk on the island, which is a nature reserve, will easily give you half a day at a slow pace. Due to the fame of this tourist attraction, it is suggested that a visit in the early morning is more appropriate. The water here is clear, the rocks are plentiful, and it is a paradise for curious children. By the way, the whole surrounding area is suitable for observing underwater life because of its rich fauna and flora. The bridge is temporarily closed - check before you travel (data from 2022).

Is the water running upward? 水往上流遊憩區

An interesting attraction can be found in Taitung County, near Donghe village. The former irrigation canals seem to have broken the laws of gravity. See for yourself if this is really the case, or if it's just a clever landscaping job. Besides, there is a nice park for a 20-minute walk, plenty of shade and a few stalls selling local products. Entrance is free, parking and toilets are also free. Address: 959, Taitung County, Donghe Township.

Safe swimming on the East coast

The wildness of the ocean often makes it unsafe to swim on the East coast of Taitung County, and there are very few places where swimming is allowed. If you take Route 11 feel free to stop at the small sheltered dock at 961, Taitung County, Chenggong Township, 花東海岸公路, where is a small beach and relatively safe swimming even in inclement weather. Plus, you can take a walk around the rock formations that surround the harbour. The small turn off the main road by the bus stop is easy to miss, note the brown signs "Shiyusan Ecological Communities". We haven't yet tried the local companies offering canoe, kayak and paddleboard rides.
